A First Time UK Visitor’s Guide to Ireland

Eagles Nest, Lakes of Killarney, Co Kerry

If you’re planning a trip to Ireland, beautiful landscapes and warm hospitality await you. For UK travellers, the journey is simple and straightforward — just a short trip across the Irish Sea, whether you’re flying or taking a ferry. Direct flights connect the UK to different areas of Ireland, and if you’re keen to explore the stunning county of Kerry or tour the famous Wild Atlantic Way, flying into Kerry Airport is a good choice. With direct flights from Manchester, Luton, and Stansted, you can arrive in Killarney quickly and easily. Killarney is an ideal base in Kerry and to start the Wild Atlantic Way.

Depending on the time of year, there are a few things you may want to consider before arriving.

Transportation

Getting around Ireland is part of the adventure. If you’re visiting Kerry, renting a car is one of the best ways to explore at your own pace, but it is not essential.  During the summer season, we recommend booking your rental car in advance of arriving. Driving is on the left-hand side, just as in the UK, so the transition is easy for first-time visitors.

For those who prefer not to drive, there are excellent tour bus options that take you along the scenic routes, including the Ring of Kerry and the Dingle Peninsula.

If you’re doing a country wide tour, booking trains in advance is also recommended during the summer season. Ireland’s rail network is the ideal mode of transport to travel through the country with direct routes from Dublin to Cork, Kerry and the west of Ireland.

Electrical Adapters

It’s good to note that Ireland uses the same three-pin plug system as the UK. This means for UK visitors that you won’t need to carry any adapters, unlike travellers arriving from mainland Europe.

Currency

Ireland’s currency is the Euro, as a UK visitor, you may want to exchange Sterling before or during your trip if you want to use cash during your travels, but similarly to the UK, most hotels, restaurants and attractions accept card transactions. If your travels take you north of the border into Northern Ireland, Sterling is used there.

Weather

Ireland is famous for its unpredictable weather — you can experience all four seasons in a single day, similar to many parts of the UK. Regardless of the season, travellers should pack wisely, bringing layers and a waterproof jacket. A light rain jacket and sturdy shoes will be needed if you are going to explore our beautiful landscapes, like Killarney National Park.

With flights from the UK that bring you straight into Kerry, a few practical tips before you arrive and the comfort of The Brehon Hotel as your base, your first trip to Ireland will be unforgettable. Start planning your trip today and book your stay at The Brehon.
