Eagles Nest, Lakes of Killarney, Co Kerry

Killarney is one of the most popular destinations in Ireland, known for its incredible scenery, lakes, and national park.

The best things to do in Killarney include Ladies View, Torc Waterfall, Muckross Abbey, Ross Castle, and scenic drives through Killarney National Park. All of these attractions are within a 5–15 minute drive of The Brehon Hotel.

This local guide highlights the top sightseeing spots that are genuinely worth your time, all within easy reach during your stay at The Brehon Hotel.

Ladies View Killarney The Brehon Hotel

Ladies View, Killarney

Ladies view is one of the most famous viewpoints in Ireland and one of the best sightseeing spots in Killarney. It sits on the N71 road between Killarney and Kenmare, high up in the hills with a sweeping view down over the Upper Lake and the Valley below.

The name comes from Queen Victoria ladies in waiting who stopped here during a royal visit in 1891. They were so taken by the view that the name stuck. On a clear day, the colours are amazing with deep blue water, green hillsides and the mountains of Killarney stretching out behind.

It is one of the most photographed spots in the whole country and when you see it for the first time, you will understand why.

Muckross House and Garden - Killarney National Park

Muckross Abbey, Killarney National Park

Muckross Abbey is one of the best preserved medieval ruins in Ireland and one of the most interesting historical sites in Killarney. It was founded in the 1400’s and sits inside Killarney National Park, just a short walk from Muckross House. The highlight is the ancient yew tree growing in the open courtyard at the centre of the abbey.

Torc Waterfall flows through lush woodland in Killarney National Park, especially striking after rainfall.

Torc Waterfall Walk

Torc Waterfall is one of the most popular and accessible attractions in Killarney National Park. Just a 5-minute drive from The Brehon Hotel, it’s a short 15-minute walk from the car park on the N71 to reach the waterfall, which cascades 20 metres over a mossy rock face.

It’s best visited after rainfall when the water flow is at its strongest, making the experience even more impressive. A viewing area at the base offers an easy stop, with the option to continue on a longer trail above the falls.

Allow 20–30 minutes for your visit, and wear suitable footwear as paths can be slippery. Suitable for all ages and fitness levels.

Killarney House and Gardens

Killarney House is one of the top three things to do in Killarney and a place that many visitors walk straight past without realising how good it is. The beautifully restored Victorian mansion sits at the main entrance to the National Park, and its grounds are open to the public at no charge.

The walled garden behind the house is one of the most peaceful spots in Killarney on a quiet morning and the formal gardens give the whole estate a real sense of occasion. The lawns are wide and open with lovely views back toward the mountains . It is kind of sightseeing spot in Killarney that does not shout for attention but rewards anyone who takes the time to explore it properly.

Ross Castle stands on the edge of Lough Leane, offering scenic views and a glimpse into Killarney’s medieval past.

Ross Castle and Ross Island Walk

Ross Castle is one of the most visited sightseeing spots in Killarney and a short drive or cycle from The Brehon. The 15th century tower house sits right on the shore of Lough Leane with the mountains behind it and is one of the best preserved castles in the South of Ireland. Ross Castle guided tours run inside daily throughout the summer and the views from the upper floors out over the lake are well worth it.

Outside, the Ross Island walking trail is a 3km loop around the peninsula taking in Ireland’s oldest copper mines. It is an easy, flat walk suitable for all ages and takes about 90 minutes. The path winds through old woodland and along the lake shore and views across to the Macgillycuddy reek’s. It is one of the best free walks near Killarney town and a brilliant way to spend a morning.

Killarney Lakes, Co Kerry

The Killarney Lakes Scenic Drives

At The Brehon, one of the most common questions we’re asked is how to see as much of Killarney as possible in a short time. Our answer is always the same: take to the road and follow the lakes.

The drives that weave through Killarney National Park and beyond aren’t just routes from one place to another, they’re part of the experience itself. Expect long stretches where you’ll want to slow down, pull in, and take it all in; from still lakes reflecting the mountains to quiet woodland roads that feel a world away from the town centre.

The N71 toward Kenmare is the route we recommend most often. It brings you past Ladies View, where the landscape opens up in layered views across the lakes, before continuing along the water’s edge toward some of Kerry’s most dramatic scenery.

Gap of Dunloe

If you’re willing to step off the main route, the Gap of Dunloe is always worth the detour. It’s a narrow, winding pass that feels largely untouched, where the pace naturally slows and the scenery becomes more intimate.

We usually advise guests not to treat it as a drive-through experience. Instead, take your time, walk sections of it, cycle it, or join one of the traditional jaunting car tours. It’s one of those places where the quieter you go, the more you notice.

Ring of Kerry

The lakeside drives also give you an easy starting point for the Ring of Kerry, one of Ireland’s most famous touring routes. While it’s well-known for its coastal views, beginning your journey in Killarney means you experience a softer, greener introduction before the landscape opens out toward the Atlantic.

From our perspective, it’s best done without a strict schedule, allow time for unplanned stops, short walks, and viewpoints that aren’t always signposted but are often the most memorable.

Jaunting car tour, Killarney National Park, Co Kerry

Jaunting cars

For those who’d prefer to leave the driving behind, a jaunting car is something we often recommend. These horse-drawn carriages have been part of Killarney for generations, and the jarveys who guide them bring a depth of local knowledge you won’t get from a map alone.

It’s an easy, relaxed way to experience the park, especially if you’re short on time or want a more personal introduction to the area.

Stay at The Brehon

The Brehon Hotel & Spa is ideally located beside Killarney National Park sights, just minutes from all of the attractions listed above. After a day of exploring, guests can relax in spacious rooms, enjoy spa treatments, or dine overlooking the mountains.
